Influences: Early years: Holbein, Velasquez, Frans Hals, Goya, El Greco. After World War II: the Impressionists Manet and Degas, the Nabis Vuillard and Bonnard and Les Peintres du Réalisme Poétique. Sierk Schröder developed a close friendship with Fontanarosa. Later years: back to the Renaissance. Important teachers: Henk Meyer and André Lhote. Other important figures: Frits Lugt, Dirk Nijland and painters such as Whistler, Jan Sluyters and Isaac Israels.
